Departments

ITEM Group’s organizational structure is designed to support its role as an independent, research-performing organization, while enabling the responsible translation of research outcomes into real-world contexts. The organization maintains a clear distinction between research activities and research-informed application, ensuring that scientific inquiry remains central to all departmental work.

Together, ITEM Group’s departments support a continuous research lifecycle—from conceptual investigation and modelling, through evaluation and validation, to responsible knowledge mobilization—guided by principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).

Research & Development Department

The Research & Development (R&D) Department is the core research unit of ITEM Group. It conducts applied and theoretical research at the intersection of mathematics, artificial intelligence, data science, and human-centred systems.

Research activities focus on the design, analysis, and evaluation of intelligent and adaptive systems addressing complex challenges in areas such as health and well-being, education, inclusive technology, aging and environment, and assistive systems. All research is conducted using rigorous scientific methodologies and is informed by ethical and EDI-oriented frameworks.

The department supports interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and external partners and contributes to research outputs, prototypes, and models that advance knowledge and inform responsible innovation.

Research Translation & Knowledge Mobilization Department

The Research Translation & Knowledge Mobilization Department supports the responsible dissemination and application of ITEM Group’s research outcomes. Its role is to translate validated research findings into research-informed tools, training materials, and pilot implementations, without replacing or displacing the organization’s core research mission.

Activities include knowledge mobilization, research-informed capacity building, and collaborative pilot initiatives with community organizations, educators, healthcare providers, and industry partners. Where applicable, the department supports the research-driven development of adaptive tools and systems aimed at improving accessibility and quality of life for underserved populations.

All activities within this department are grounded in research evidence and guided by EDI principles, ensuring that innovation remains ethical, inclusive, and socially responsible.

Training & Education Research Department

The Training & Education Research Department conducts research on inclusive education, digital literacy, and AI-focused learning models across diverse populations and learning contexts.

The department develops and evaluates research-informed curricula, pedagogical frameworks, and learning interventions for learners at various stages, including K–12, post-secondary, adult learners, and individuals with limited prior technical exposure. Educational activities are grounded in research on learning, accessibility, and equity, and contribute to broader research capacity-building goals.

Through this work, the department supports ITEM Group’s mission to expand equitable access to knowledge while advancing research on effective and inclusive approaches to education and training.
